Chapter 10
Chloe
âYou can stop checking your phone now,â Morgan teases as we pile around our living room table and each snag a piece of pizza that Stacy had flirted out of a guy in one of her classes.
âFor real, Clo, you never pay attention to your phone but youâve looked at it like ten thousand times tonight,â Stacy adds.
Morgan nods along, carefully picking all the veggies off her slice of pizza and popping them into her mouth.
âAre you seriously not going to eat the rest of that?â I ask, gesturing toward her stripped slice of pizza ignoring their taunts about my phone. âI feel like that should be a crime of some sort to maim a pizza like that. Stacy, can we call the cops on her for this?â
Stacy giggles, sucking mozzarella off her thumb. âIf it isnât against the law, it should be.â
Batting innocent lashes, Morgan just shrugs. âIâve got a car show tomorrow. I donât want to get all bloated. Did you know tomatoes cause bloating? Iâm going to start cutting out caffeine, too.â
âOh please,â I say. âYouâd die without your morning coffee. I saw you that one day you were in a rush to get to work and didn't have time for any. You were like one of those horror movie zombies, murderous and sluggish all at once.â
âCoffee has caffeine?â Morgan asks, panic-stricken.
With a roll of her eyes, Stacy reaches over and snags Morganâs abused pizza slice, taking a big bite and smirking at me from across the table. âI guess that leaves more for us.â
I laugh and nod, nibbling at my own pizza before again being consumed by my phone. I slide through the lock only to find that I have no new messages.
Morgan pensively gnaws on something for a second before spitting a half-chewed piece of pepperoni on her plate, frowning at it. âI thought you were a pepper!â she cries as though it personally offended her.
Stacy wrinkles her nose at Morgan but turns back to me. âOkay, youâve got to spill it, Chloe. Whatâs going on? Iâve never seen you like this before. Are you waiting for a man to call, or something?â
âWhat? No! Of course not!â I sputter, shoving my phone into my pocket and trying to pretend my face isnât turning candy apple red. âThat would be crazy!â
Morgan and Stacy just look at one another, shake their heads, and frown back at me. I feel suddenly like Iâm in the principalâs office getting a lecture. Stacy is going to be good at that once she graduates from her teaching program. Her look of disapproval will be enough to strike fear in the hearts of third-graders everywhere.
Stacy sighs dramatically. âSomebody is protesting too much.â
âThat means itâs time for the truth serum,â Morgan squeals, leaping up to grab the bottle of Merlot I bought on the way home.
I bury my face in my hands.
Ugh. What am I doing right now?
Donovanâs not going to text me back.
Why did I have to send that dumb dinosaur
